RedCross ThankYou letter for Nepal 2015

2015/06/09

Dear Huyen,

ere are no words to express my gratitude for your continued support of our relief and recovery efforts in Nepal. Thank you so much for your incredible generosity as we continue to rebuild from the devastation of not one, but two major earthquakes.

Much has happened in the first month since the earthquake occurred. I’ve included below some links to provide you with an update on the work we’ve been doing, a brief slideshow with images from Nepal, and an interview with one of our disaster specialists who deployed a few days after the earthquake took place.

One-Month Update
Slideshow
Interview with Disaster Specialist in Nepal

We could not do any of this work without the support of our donors like you.  The generosity of the American public has been overwhelming, raising over $25 million to support relief efforts in Nepal. These funds are being used to provide earthquake survivors with essential relief supplies, such as water containers, tarps and kitchen sets and will continue to be distributed as future needs are determined.

Thank you so much for everything you’ve assist our efforts in Nepal,
Nell

Nepal Earthquake Relief – Virginia

2015/05/17

Dear Benefactors,

On behalf of the victims in peril by the earthquake in Nepal, Tu Bi Foundation would like to express our sincere appreciation to our teachers and benefactors for their contributions to “Nepal Earthquake Relief”. We have 1 more week before fundraising end. The money raised will be sent to the American Red Cross (International). Just when lives have not stabilized, 3 weeks later Nepal suffers a second earthquake, a 7.3 magnitude on 05.12.2015. To date over 8,200 people have died … I remember the earthquake and tsunami that happened to Japan in 2011. Tu Bi Foundation was grace with the opportunity to visit the refugee camp and live there for a few days, everyday there were after shock.

Currently in Nepal, hundreds of thousands of families are living in makeshift camps not knowing what will happen in the future, because Nepal was constantly experiencing shock the day after. Hunger, disease, homelessness … people are suffering endlessly!

2015Nepal_Virginia

So far, Tu Bi Foundation has sent $11,000 to the Red Cross, the total amount will be calculated on 05/20/2015. Fortunately, the money we raise will be match by the Red Cross 100%. This morning we received news from Red Cross of the current situation and that the money sent be distributed for tents to cover from the rain and sun, food, water … help victims settle into a centralize camps.

Tu Bi Foundation in Houston has donated $15,000. In Virginia, many supporters have promise to help and Tu Bi is waiting to receive their checks. The money we will raise is $ 5,851. We predict the total donation raise will be approximately $21,000 + Red Cross matching 100%, the final total will be $42,000.  Thanks to the contributions of our benefactors, hundreds of families will be comforted and care for …

American Red Cross
 We’re grateful for you.

Dear Huyen,

On April 25, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal, destroying hundreds of thousands of homes, injuring thousands of people and, heartbreakingly, killing more than 8,000 people. Moments after news of the disaster spread, you and thousands of other selfless members of the global Red Cross community came together to support those in need in Nepal. Thank you, for being there. With Tuesday’s 7.3 magnitude earthquake and ongoing aftershocks, your commitment continues to make it possible for the Red Cross to conduct critical assessments, coordinate response efforts and reconnect families separated by the earthquake.

Thanks to your generosity, relief efforts are well underway. There are 24 Red Cross societies currently on the ground in Nepal, and we’re working closely together to get supplies distributed – including fresh water, tents, tarps, food, latrines, satellite communications, and more. In addition to working with our global Red Cross partners, the American Red Cross has committed $5 million in funds to ongoing relief work, we deployed close to a dozen disaster specialists, and we provided essential supplies to support the response. We’re currently developing preliminary plans with the Nepal Red Cross to do long term recovery and are targeting entire villages to help rebuild.

We're grateful for you

I just returned from a sobering visit to Nepal. The destruction is far reaching, and many of the areas that have been impacted are so very remote. We had to hike over hilly terrain to get a sense of the damage, and several of the areas we saw were totally flattened. It will take a great deal of time and resources for communities to recover. But the people I met also displayed amazing resilience as they were helping their neighbors heal and begin to recover.

While I am still incredibly saddened when I think of the lives lost, the homes and schools that have been destroyed, and the communities that have been forever altered – I am encouraged by the tremendous work of the global Red Cross network and our partners in the ongoing response operation. I am truly humbled by the strength and resiliency of the Nepalese people, and the compassionate support of donors like you.

With gratitude,
Gail McGovern

Peaceful Pure Water Well 2015

Peaceful Pure Water Well, 3/29/2015 – Remembrance and Appreciation

Dear Benefactors;

Below are some pictures of the 15 wells in Cà Mâu and 7 wells in India to commemorate in appreciation to the late Venerable Thích Trí Tịnh.

Lieu Duyen has been involved in charitable activities in Vietnam many times, but she usually travel from September to December.  Traveling in March is not as easy because of the susceptibility to ‘heat stroke’ since the temperature range from 100-103′ F.  For 2 days in a row we were outdoor the entire day – riding a motorbike, taxi, boat, and working with the locals in U Minh province.   So by the time we return to Saigon, we needed an entire day of rest, we discovered our skin was burned because we didn’t have experience doing charity during the hot season (next time we will apply many layers of sun protection).

Lieu Duyen and Ms. Nghia represent Tu Bi Foundation, traveling via Phuong Trang Guest Car from Saigon to Ca Mau over night.  By the time we reach Ca Mau, we only have time to change our clothes, eat breakfast, and proceed directly to inaugurate the bridge at U Minh.  At Ca Mau, the elders in the Buddhist charity group were incredible, enthusiastic and hard working.  The joy of doing charity work in remote areas is that the local authorities are very concern for the people and are grateful for the gifts that we built for their region.  People are happy, their happiness is clearly visible on their faces.   In their house they have grown bananas and papayas which they present freshly picked for the delegation.

The Peaceful Pure Water Project was very meaningful to us as it is a program that Buddhist groups in Virginia, California, and Maryland have contributed to commemorate in gratitude to the late Venerable Thích Trí Tịnh.   Thanks to his translation and compilation, many generations have access to sutras to study and chanting.

Tu Bi Foundation has built seven wells in India on the 49th day of the venerable passing.  On the 1 year anniversary, the Peaceful Pure Water Well Project have completed construction of 15 wells in U Minh and Ca Mau province – our sincere appreciation and remembrance.

In India, Venerable Tánh Tuệ dedication and continuous effort to go from one village to another to build water well accessible to more than 50 families.  We would like to thank you for your hard work in our programs to benefit all sentient beings.

U Minh province is an agricultural area, mostly forest with no roads – it is only accessible by boat.  The distance between homes is very remote so choosing a location that is accessible for many families to share was not an easy task.  It took the entire day for the delegation to travel to all 15 water wells.  Without these wells, the families will have to bathe and wash their clothes in water ponds nearby and use rainwater to drink.

Most of the families who receive water wells are ethnic minority living in remote region; hence, their understanding is limited so we need to go to each well to examine the odor and check for alum.  We also remind them to get/use the water regularly to maintain it’s quality.

In the past, there was a family that receive a well water but didn’t know how to use it, instead of pumping water from the well they took water from a nearby pond and poured it into the well. So the well water became red with alum. Since then LD has asked local officials to explain clearly to people on how to use the water well when construction is done.

After finishing the work, we boarded Phuong Trang guest car to travel overnight back to Saigon and Lieu Duyen return to the United States.

Visit Recitation Buddha Hall – Leprosy patients in Quy Nhơn 2015.10.03

Visit Recitation (Niệm) Buddha (Phật) Hall (Đường) & Leprosy patients in Quy Nhơn 10/3/2015

Under the guidance of Venerable Linh Toàn, the Buddhist charity group in Lâm Đồng on March 10, 2015, on behalf of Tu Bi Foundation, Lieu Duyen and Vien Thong Temple’s bhikkhunī Hoa Vien accompanied the charity group to Niệm Phật Đường Bênh Viện Phong Quy Hòa. We were taken by Lam Dong province charity group’s ambulance from Da Lat to Quy Nhon. The vehicle carried a full load of supplies that Venerable Linh Toan had mobilized from Buddhist near and far over time: Mindfulness Bell, book stands, potatoes … The road was bumpy and tiring because the car does not have air conditioning – the bad road and distance (in VN,most people are not used to driving with the AC on). After 8 hours of driving, the delegation arrived in Quy Nhon safely, although during the whole trip we had to stop many times because some people in the group were not well.

When it was late afternoon, we stopped at the hotel and went straight to Quy Nhon Phong Camp to distribute scholarships with the help of Hoa Hiểu Thương Association (they help students whose parents are living and being treated at BV Leprosy). Bhikkhunī Chân Uy Nghiêm pass out 100 scholarships, 500,000 VND each (~ 25US). There were more students than expected, Tu Bi Foundation cover the shortage. Bhikkhunī and Venerable Linh Toan have been tending to the students with questions on morality, their enthusiastic answer made the scholarship event to become lively and meaningful. Fortunately, even thought their parents have leprosy parents but the children have not, so they were able to go to school like other children. This money will be toward their transportation ride to school from the leprosy camp. Hopefully when they grow up they will not be sick as their parents. The aspiration of the children is to be educatute and able to help parents and patients heal quickly.

Thanh Lương Bridge Inauguration 2014.12.07

2014/12/07

Channel Nhum Rach, Rach Dong Khanh Binh Commune Nhum.
Length 35MX2M Bridge.

Local resident have requested help for more than 1 year ago, but only now have fate is able materialize their aspiration.  Our sincere appreciation to the family of Ms. Từ Ánh (Advance Surgergy Center) for funding the construction of this concrete bridge.  Where there are students, we will do our best to find ways to help.  The locals promised that ‘once the bridge is built, we will pave the path so that the people can can easily commute back and forth.’   When the delegation arrived, we found the locals had already started digging the land  on their own to make way.  From there we see the importance of concrete bridge and the many benefits it brought to students and people in the region.

In addition to the bridge inauguration, the TBF distributed gifts to 50 elementary school children in the region.

Liên Hoa và Pháp Hoa Bridge 2014.12.06

2014/12/06

Dear Benefactors,

Bridges Liên Hoa và Pháp Hoa were funded Phap Hoa Charity in Virginia and was inaugurated on December 6, 2014.  It was the first time we took an overnight bus from Saigon to CaMau, though nervous we were amused by the builtin bed as we departed at 11 pm and arrived 5:30 am in CaMau.  During the trip we were all worried that the driver may fall asleep at the wheel and that would be the end of our journey.  Currently, traveling in Vietnam is expensive – rental car from Saigon to the southern provinces.  Our delegation wanted to try once to see how much can save, the result was was save of 1/3 compare to car rentals.

On arrival, we immediately start preparing for inauguration of the bridge.  From Ca Mau to commune Bac Tan Loc, Thoi Binh district by car and then by motorcycle took almost 2 hours.  The following morning the delegation attended the inauguration of Liên Hoa Bridge, when we saw the 22 meters concrete bridge and students waiting for the delegates to arrive, we forget all the tiredness, felt happy and contented. In the afternoon, we went to inaugurate Pháp Hoa Bridge in the commune Dinh Binh Long 29 meters.

The expression of the students and the elders of the area made it more evident as to the benefits of the concrete bridge.  In the past, pedestrians had to cross on a monkey bridge by foot, leaving the bicycle on the side.  Now people and bicycle can travel easily.  At the inaugural ceremony, we also brought gifts for students and perform the animal liberation ceremony to pray for peace to all living beings.

Tu Bi Foundation is sincerely appreciate Pháp Hoa Charity, this amount is due to the contributions of many donors who at the Eden Center, Virginia.

Respectfully,
Tu Bi Foundation
